How Standards Are Made

Our Development Process

Proposal

Any member or the public can propose a new standard. Proposals reviewed by the Standards Committee.

Research

Working group formed with diverse expertise. Evidence gathered from threat data, existing frameworks, and stakeholder input.

Draft

Draft standard developed and reviewed internally. All working group members must declare relevant interests.

Expert Review

Draft standards undergo structured review by subject-matter experts and governance stakeholders before approval and publication.

Publication

Final standard published under Creative Commons licence. Free to read, implement, and share.

FAQ

Standards Questions

No. UKCSC standards are voluntary. We are a private standards body with no regulatory authority. Organisations choose to adopt them as a mark of good practice and to signal commitment to cybersecurity to clients and partners.
UKCSC standards are complementary to, not replacements for, existing schemes. Our SME standard is informed by Cyber Essentials but goes further in areas such as human factors and supply chain. We publish alignment matrices for major frameworks.
All active standards are published under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 (CC BY 4.0). You may freely use, adapt, and incorporate them, including commercially, provided you credit the UKCSC.
Contact the Secretariat to discuss a standard or request information about participating in expert review. Members may receive early access to drafts and participate in working groups where appropriate.
